Teaching the right way- By Mekhala Ganguly

What would you do to teach in the right way? Change the content or the process?

From the beginning of a child’s school life, it has been that they gradually lose interest in their studies even before reaching a specialization. This is because neither the school teachers nor other institutions intend to play on the children’s curiosity. Several verticals that cater to multiple issues such as poor concentration, personality development, exam phobia, poor memory, communication skills, etc. can be improved through class-based differentiated instruction, individual-based personalized learning, group-based collaborative learning and mass-based generative learning.

The method of teaching and learning is anabolic.

In a conventional classroom, the teaching method and the goal set for each student are always the same. When you teach students from different backgrounds, the focus has to be made that they will have different needs. Every student deserves a teaching pattern that can match the study material and performance standards to promote their understanding. This kind of differentiated instruction emphasizes each student’s specific needs and consequently enhances the basic knowledge along with the core interests and skills for students.

Where the core is focused on rote learning, how will you educate the mass?

With this being said, schools and tuition classes focus only on the subjects. The thing is, the learner is to be addressed and not the subjects. Their tendency is more towards mugging-up-by-heart rather than pragmatic applications. For the greatest impact, the methodology ought to include learning both inside and outside the study hall. The teachers would then control and make students effectively partake in their learning cycle through intuitive, interactive, and empowering learning conditions.

There is no focus on experimental learning, an innovative approach towards theoretical study, or practical implementations of the topics being taught. This is where the teaching process is questionable. No measures are taken to invoke a child’s interest in a topic by portraying its wide applications instead of the theoretical approach.

Not just this, with the changing times, compared to the students of the past, now the classrooms are full of sophisticated, young and bright minds that come with already a detailed knowledge of technology and smart devices. Kids nowadays arrive at Kindergarten with less naivety than those of previous generations. The education system is still using the methods of yesterday. Teachers, therefore, no longer can hold their place. Technology, therefore, faces its downsides, not being able to cope up with this modern generation.

Do you think it is the end? Just the lack of differentiated teaching and poor infrastructure?

No, the flaws in our education system do not end here. Societal pressure is one of the major problems, especially in our democratic country. Guardians have been believed to compel their darling kids to get into the best establishments for monetary security ahead. They are compelled to examine the subjects or pick the profession; they don’t have an interest. This will, in general, represent a great deal of tension on the learners.

It also eats away the creativity in many children’s minds by putting an end to their choices and their non-academic activities, thus, making them cramming nerds. As per psychology, this disturbs the emotional quotients in the already emotionally unstable children. This has led to a depression state in numerous children and turn, led to suicides. The pressure of scoring more marks in an exam than other kids has become a driving force for education among the people rather than acquiring important knowledge and skills.

Starting from preschool or rather playschool at the age of 2, the children start competing with one another for a better position and fame. This desire to win either comes from within themselves or is sometimes stimulated by their parents. How consistently do these children remain who start running from the very beginning of their life? Most of them get tired. Their energy gets exhausted. They almost give up when they should give their utmost in winning their goal. They jump for easier options, be it in career or other fields. They feel it’s better to work within limits and be at peace rather than the luxury they truly deserved. They ultimately fail from frustration.

Hurrying for it from the very beginning can drain one before being even close to their goals. This is where every person makes a mistake choosing the easier way, thus giving up and surrendering. The moment the situation is addressed is moved away from educating the mass on how to impart education effectively, the academic efficiency will come up dramatically.

What changes can we do to make the students want to learn and excel in their studies?

Steps have to be taken to make a substantial difference with a child-centric approach to academics and non-academics. Among their learners, there will exist individual differences and learning styles. Work to be done towards framing and building up the children’s capabilities and core skills, which would hold their interest and strengthen their learning abilities.

As per the learners’ adapting needs, learning cycles should be custom-made that incorporate necessities, interests, foundation, inclinations, etc. The way toward learning is characterized by seeing new ideas, creating aptitudes, and molding them to obtain ability. Kids have been seen to mug up the books aimlessly without knowing the pragmatic applications for the equivalent. All things being equal, they get youthful personalities, cultivating, or remediating, jumbled with inventive thoughts.

Utilization of omnipresent cooperative learning spaces is to be done, which through setting mindfulness and ongoing learning administrations will effectively change customary learning spaces into clever, encompassing learning conditions. It is additionally an opportunity to execute keen learning in the advanced training framework. Individualized guidance and creativity-centered schooling should be considered as the principal guideline of modern education. Consequently, the modern learning climate would turn out to be powerful, with the accessibility of suggestions and study tools to direct them correctly, anytime, anywhere.

Innovation can be empowered where the teachers and learners can feel as though they were sitting, one next to the other, and connect with while having one-on-one discussions. They should empower staff to assess every kid’s degree of commitment, keep them roused, and react to them exclusively like a regular study hall. The methodology ought to take into account the learners of all age bunch directly from the principal standard to the degree of hopefuls getting ready for serious tests. The aim should be to engage all those students who wouldn’t participate in an on-campus classroom discussion and building principals to fine-tune a vision for their career, write action steps, craft goals, etc.

Teaching the right way will be possible that day when we will successfully identify why children consider their studies a burden to them and implement innovative solutions to boost their interest and skills.

The education system that we implement should be available to all classes of people, starting from youngsters to all adults who want to continue learning, the rich who can afford the best to the poor. Delivering at least primary education to all the children in India is still a dream come true. Making it affordable, accessible, understandable, and genuinely beneficial for the mass is still a challenge to overcome.
